Eighteenth century Amish culture meets 21st century consumer culture in this custom oak table-and-bench installation in the new Jamba Juice corporate headquarters in Emeryville, CA.

The oak used for these pieces comes from Amish agricultural buildings built between 1750 and 1850. These devout, hardworking people felled the oak trees and erected the structures themselves, in some cases more than 200 years ago, using only hand tools, pre-industrial technology and old-world craft skills.

As these graceful old Amish structures are taken down to make room for new development, the hand-hewn oak used in the buildings is reclaimed for as-is applications or remilled into flooring and other products. Because Amish farmers prize functionality, these aging structures are also taken down and replaced with new, more efficient and weather-tight facilities.

For the Jamba project – designed by Pollack Architecture and facilitated by MG West, both of San Francisco – TerraMai custom-milled and fabricated conference and gathering tables from this vintage wood at our facility in McCloud, CA. Now, Jamba staff, clients and visitors commune with generations of Amish farm families spanning more than 200 years each time they sit at a table for a meeting or lunch.

This Amish oak is the same material we use to mill our Authentic Amish Oak flooring. The material is also available as lumber and beams, replete with the original hand-hewn and circle-sawn surface character. This is truly special material that connects to a different time and way of life.
