reclaimed wood: To put it simply, reclaimed wood has been used before or has been diverted from the waste stream. It is deconstructed from houses, mills, barns, bridges, tanks, warehouses, towers, railroads and just about anything else that industrious humans have built over the centuries. SmartWood, a Forest Stewardship Council certification organization, also classifies the following as reclaimed, “…trees from orchards that are unproductive and cut for replacement; trees from (sub)urban private and government properties (non-forested areas) that are dead, fallen, diseased, or a nuisance; wood by-products from secondary manufacturers (by-products from primary manufacturers do not qualify).” Unlike the complicated and sometimes subjective criteria that applies to “sustainable certified” woods, reclaimed woods must have a very clear and easily documented history to truly be considered reclaimed.

All of the wood we reclaim has stopped being used for its original purpose. It is from buildings already slated for demolition, railway ties and telephone poles being replaced by concrete, orchards that are past productive age and old homes that have been abandoned or are no longer in use. Consistent with SmartWood standards, we are careful to ensure that all of our wood is removed in a way that does not negatively impact the environment.

TerraMai only deals in reclaimed wood. We proudly stand behind all our woods and their origin. Upon request, we will provide you a certificate of authenticity confirming that the specific wood that you have purchased from TerraMai is in fact, reclaimed and advising of its origin.
